Construction jobs – Beyond laborers and activity foremen

Many people believe that construction jobs are meant for individuals with low skill and training. However, building and construction is a highly professional sector requiring specialized training and some years of experience.
Individuals looking to enter the sector have a wide range of jobs to choose from – with a job for every interest and level of training. Every construction  project begins with a design team that consists of architects and engineers. These professionals team up with property developers to develop a set of building plans that are used to build the project.
Engineers and architects must consider building codes, safety and the intended function of the structure when creating their designs. Even after the plans are complete, the design team is still actively involved in construction process. They carryout  inspections, participate in job site meetings and generally oversee the project until its completion.
General contractors – the companies responsible for a project's construction from conception to completion - offer various professional construction jobs. They usually hire project managers and project engineers, who create budgets, update schedules and coordinate all those involved in the project.
Project managers and engineers may work on site with a superintendent who oversees the daily field operations - and typically operates out of a make-shift office. While project managers often have construction or engineering degrees, superintendents usually rise through the trades and do not need university degrees.
Those interested in more hands-on construction jobs may find it worthwhile to work with a subcontracting company. These companies are contracted by general contractors to carryout the physical work on the job site. Subcontracting companies usually require workers of all skill levels. Their teams comprise both unskilled laborers and highly skilled technicians who often perform specialty tasks.
Lastly, working as a building inspector is also a possibility for those looking for construction jobs. Building inspectors typically work for municipal councils and are responsible for reviewing house plans, issuing building permits and inspecting the projects for safety and code compliance.
